Men’s Health Month

Did you know that 64% of men wait more than seven days with symptoms before visiting the doctor?

This statistic from the ‘Real Face of Men’s Health’ report is concerning, but sadly not surprising.

As we embrace Movember, a month dedicated to raising awareness about men’s health, it’s a good time to encourage ourselves and the men in our lives to prioritise wellbeing.

What are common men’s health issues?

Taking care of your health is essential, but it’s easy to overlook symptoms or put off that doctor’s appointment. Let’s explore some common health issues affecting men and how you can take proactive steps to address them.

Obesity

Whether caused by a poor diet, lack of physical activity, medical condition, or medication, obesity is a common health issue for men. In 2018, around 70% of men (aged 16 years+) were reported to be overweight or obese. Everyone should aim to maintain a healthy body weight of (BMI 18.5-25 kg/m2). The NHS has a useful resource for measuring your BMI here – https://www.nhs.uk/health-assessment-tools/calculate-your-body-mass-index/.

Carrying excess weight can lead to serious health problems like heart disease, diabetes, and a stroke.

If you are currently obese or overweight, start by incorporating more physical activity into your daily routine. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week such as brisk walking, cycling, or even playing football with friends.

Small changes in your diet can also make a big difference. Try swapping out processed foods for fresh fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Setting realistic goals and making gradual changes can lead to lasting results.

Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men. Early stages often have no symptoms, so regular check-ups are extremely important.
Symptoms to watch out for include difficulty urinating, a weak urine flow, frequent urges to urinate (especially at night), or blood in urine or semen. While these symptoms don’t always mean cancer, they should prompt a visit to your doctor.

If you’re over 50, or over 45 with a family history of prostate cancer, talk to your GP about screening options. Being informed about your risk factors and maintaining regular check-ups can lead to early detection and more effective treatment.

Testicular Cancer

Although rare, a lump or firm part of the testicle can indicate testicular cancer, and it’s important to get this checked with your GP as soon as possible. Testicular cancer is one of the most treatable cancers and, when caught in the early stages, has a cure rate close to 100%.

Many men are able to identify the problem by doing a self-exam – this is a useful guide – https://www.baus.org.uk/_userfiles/pages/files/Patients/Leaflets/Testicular%20self%20examination.pdf If you notice a lump, or feel any pain, discomfort or swelling, or any changes in your testicles or scrotum, then book in with your GP immediately.

Mental Health

Mental health issues like depression, anxiety, and stress affect many men but are often left unaddressed due to stigma or reluctance to discuss feelings. According to the Real Face of Men’s Health Report, men in England are three times more likely to die from suicide than women. Suicide is also the leading cause of death for men aged 20-34.

If you are struggling with your mental health, contact someone you trust and share how you’re feeling. That could be a friend, family member, or a professional. Engaging in activities you enjoy, staying connected with others, and practising mindfulness or relaxation techniques can also help manage stress and improve your mood.

Remember, seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. You’re not alone, and support is available.
