Preventative health screenings for women
When life is busy with balancing work, family, and everything in between, it’s easy for your own health to slip down the priority list – and easy to assume that how you’re feeling is ‘just stress’ or ‘just getting older.’ Preventative health screenings are about taking a small amount of time now to reduce uncertainty later, and to catch potential issues early, when they are most treatable.
Here we’ll look at what to expect from a preventative health screening for women, and why they are so important.
Why preventative screening matters in midlife
The NHS provides excellent screening programmes, but they don’t cover every stage of a woman’s life in detail. For example, breast screening in the NHS typically starts from age 50, and while this is effective for population-level prevention, it does leave a gap for women in their 30s and 40s who may still have risk factors or concerns.
Even more significantly, there is no routine NHS screening programme for ovarian cancer, which means many women only come to attention once symptoms become more advanced. According to Target Ovarian Cancer, if diagnosed at the earliest stage, around 9 in 10 women will survive, but unfortunately two thirds are diagnosed late, when treatment is more complex and outcomes are less favourable.
Symptoms of ovarian or breast conditions can often be subtle or easily attributed to stress, hormonal changes, or digestive issues. For more information on ovarian cancer symptoms and risk, Target Ovarian Cancer offers clear and reliable patient guidance (here).
The conditions most likely to be missed in women
Heart disease is widely perceived as a male problem, but it is actually the leading cause of death in women in the UK. Research found that women have a 50% higher chance than men of receiving the wrong initial diagnosis following a heart attack, partly because women often experience different symptoms – nausea, jaw pain, fatigue or back pain rather than the classic chest pressure that doctors are trained to recognise. Around 100 women are admitted to hospital with a heart attack every day in the UK. Knowing your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels is one of the most effective ways to understand your personal risk before symptoms ever appear.
Thyroid dysfunction is another condition that is frequently overlooked in midlife women. Symptoms including fatigue, weight changes, mood shifts, and poor sleep so closely mirror those of perimenopause. Studies suggest that around 1 in 8 women will experience a thyroid condition at some point in their lives, and prevalence increases significantly during the perimenopause. A simple blood test can distinguish between the two, yet many women go undiagnosed for years.
These are conditions that affect large numbers of women in midlife, often quietly and without dramatic warning signs, which is exactly why a structured health check makes such a difference.
What a women’s health check includes
At EssexPrivateGP, our women’s health screening is designed to look at the bigger picture. It begins with a detailed conversation about your family history, lifestyle, and any symptoms or concerns you may have, because context matters just as much as test results.
From there, we carry out a physical examination, which can include a breast check to assess for any changes such as lumps, skin texture differences, or nipple changes. While most breast changes are benign, early assessment is key. Symptoms such as new lumps, changes in shape or size, skin dimpling, or nipple discharge, should always be checked promptly rather than monitored at home.
We also measure blood pressure and perform blood testing, which can include markers for diabetes, cholesterol, and thyroid function. These tests help build a clear picture of your cardiovascular and metabolic health, areas that can change significantly during perimenopause and menopause.
In addition, we can include an ovarian cancer blood test (CA125), which may be used alongside other assessments where appropriate. While CA125 is not a standalone diagnostic tool, it can provide useful information when interpreted in context with symptoms and clinical findings.
Taking a proactive approach to your health
Preventative screening ensures you give yourself the same level of care you give to everyone else in your life. Many women tell us that once they’ve had a comprehensive health check, they feel more confident making decisions about their lifestyle, future planning, and overall wellbeing.
At EssexPrivateGP, we take time to listen, explain results clearly, and support you in understanding what your body is telling you – including whether symptoms that feel like ‘just menopause’ may warrant further investigation.
